[BUNJANG] Celadon Scholar's Beast /
Its limbs are gathered and bent towards the front of its body, with carved toe patterns on the claws. The back has a simplified mane design, and the overall crafting technique is antique and concise.
The base is flat, unglazed, and reveals the clay body. The clay is coarse, loose, and shows natural soil absorption and aging marks, indicative of the original firing technique in a wood-fired kiln.
Historically referred to as a 'spirit warding beast', it is a fusion of a lion and an auspicious creature. Ancient people believed it guarded homes, dispelled evil spirits, protected peace, and repelled ghosts and goblins. It served as a吉祥 (auspicious) decorative item, either interred in aristocratic tombs during the Wei-Jin period or placed as a desk ornament for scholars.
A similar form with a fitting on the back, used as a candlestick, exists. However, this piece lacks the fitting and is purely a decorative ceramic sculpture of an auspicious beast for display and appreciation.
