[BUNJANG] Dogon Mask from Mali /
Dogon masks were primarily managed by a male society called 'Awa' and were used in funeral rituals known as 'Dama', accompanied by dance. Within this dance, the mask served not merely as a facial covering, but as a medium connecting the spirit world and the living, facilitating the soul's journey to the afterlife.
This particular mask features four wooden rods extending upwards from the face. While Dogon masks vary, representing different animals or mythical beings, the upward-extending form typically symbolizes aspiration towards the heavens and the ancestral realm. The face is characterized by triangular eyes, a round mouth, and simple lines, conveying expression through minimal form rather than elaborate detail.
This piece is attractive when displayed with furniture or plants in your home.
Republic of Mali
