**Synopsis:**
Forrest Gump is a man with below-average intelligence and leg braces. However, his mother goes to great lengths to ensure he attends a regular school. Despite being bullied, Forrest befriends Jenny, who treats him kindly. One day, while running from bullies, Forrest removes his leg braces and discovers his incredible running speed.

Forrest's running talent earns him a scholarship to college. Meanwhile, Jenny, who suffered abuse from her father, is expelled from college and drifts with a hippie group.

After graduating, Forrest enlists in the army and serves in the Vietnam War, where his speed helps him save his comrades. After his discharge, he and Lieutenant Dan, who lost his leg in the war, become successful shrimp boat owners.

Receiving news of his mother's critical illness, Forrest returns home. After his mother's passing, he lives alone in his childhood home, waiting for Jenny. After a long wait, Jenny finds him, but she leaves again. Heartbroken, Forrest runs out of his house and continues to run across the country for three years.

줄거리포레스트 검프는 아이큐가 보통보다 낮은 데다가 다리까지 불편하다. 하지만 어머니는 보통 아이들이 다니는 학교에 보내기 하기 위해 무슨 희생이든 감수하여 그를 학교에 넣는다. 포레스트는 아이들의 놀림 속에 학교를 다니는데 자신에게 친절히 대해주는 친구 제니를 만나 친해진다. 어느날 놀리는 아이들에게 쫓겨 도망을 치던 포레스트는 다리에 걸치고 다녔던 보조기구마저 떼어내 버리고 자신이 엄청나게 빠른 속도로 달릴 수 있다는 사실을 알게 된다.
포레스트는 달리기 재능으로 미식축구 선수 특기생으로 대학에까지 입학한다. 한편 어릴 때부터 아버지에게 학대를 받은 제니는 대학에서 제적당하고 히피 그룹에 끼어 떠돌아 다닌다.
포레스트는 대학 졸업 후 군에 입대하여 베트남전에 참전하고 빠른 다리 덕분에 전우들을 구하는 공로를 세운다. 제대를 한 그는 베트남전에서 다리를 잃은 댄 중위와 함께 새우잡이 어선의 선주가 되어 큰 돈을 번다.
그 즈음 어머니가 위독하다는 소식을 들은 포레스트는 고향으로 돌아오고 어머니가 돌아가신 후 고향집에 혼자 살며 제니를 기다린다. 오랜 기다림 끝에 그를 찾아온 제니, 그러나 제니는 다시 떠나고 제니를 보낸 포레스트는 집을 뛰쳐나가 3년동안 전국방방곡곡을 계속해서 뛰어다닌다.
