[BUNJANG] Hae-sa Kim Seong-geun Calligraphy 'Chumojae' on Large Hanji Paper (1835-1919) / 고서화 조선말 명필가 해사 김성근 추모재 전지 장지에 묵서
Kim Seong-geun was a prominent scholar-official and master calligrapher of the late Joseon period. He passed the state examination in 1862 and held various important positions, including inspector of the Yeumugwan, royal secretary, governor of Jeollado province, chief of Hongmungwan, chief of Gyujanggak, and minister of the Ministry of Taxation.
He used the pen name 'Hae-sa' and his calligraphy graces the signboards of many Buddhist temples, including Beomeosa Temple in Busan, Daeheungsa Temple in Haenam, Donghwasa Temple in Daegu, and Okcheonsa Temple in Goseong. His work is also found on the famous Gwanghallu Pavilion in Namwon, Jeollabuk-do, and the Yonghaejung Pavilion in Gurye.
This piece, 'Chumojae', is a large-scale work written to console and honor the spirit of ancestors or the deceased.
The seal reads 'Kim Seong-geun'.
Calligraphy on large Hanji paper from this era is exceptionally rare. The condition reflects its age and the nature of Joseon-era Hanji; minor creases are present due to the paper's age but it flattens well. Overall, it is in good condition.
Dimensions: 112 cm x 62 cm.
