This coin, the Heungjo Tongbo, was minted in Yunnan by Sun Kewang, a leader of the peasant army who joined the Southern Ming Dynasty after the Ming Dynasty's fall. The era name 'Heungjo' signifies the ambition to establish a new dynasty. It served as the economic foundation for the Southern Ming resistance forces, which maintained an independent power despite the Qing Dynasty's pressure.

The inscription 'O-ri (五厘)' on the reverse indicates a value of 5 li of silver, showcasing a unique monetary system that specified the exchange rate between coins and silver under the silver-standard economic system.

​'흥조(興朝)'라는 연호는 새로운 왕조를 일으키겠다는 의지를 담고 있으며, 청나라의 압박 속에서도 독자적인 세력을 유지하던 남명 저항군의 경제적 기반이 되었습니다.

뒷면에 각인된 '오리(五厘)'는 은 5리의 가치를 지닌다는 의미로, 당시 은본위제 경제 체제 아래에서 동전과 은 사이의 교환 비율을 명시한 독특한 화폐 체계를 보여줍니다.
