[BUNJANG] Seolju Song Un-hwe Calligraphy - Six Scrolls / 고서화 율곡 이이 다도의 내용 행초의 달인 설주 송운회 묵서 6폭 서

This is a collection of six ink calligraphy scrolls by Seolju Song Un-hwe, a master of the Haengseo (semi-cursive) script.

Seolju Song Un-hwe (1874-1965) was a representative calligrapher of modern Korea, dedicating his life to calligraphy through the turbulent periods of the late Joseon Dynasty, the Japanese colonial era, and the Korean War.

Born in Boseong, Jeollanam-do, he studied under Yeongjae Lee Geon-chang, a prominent scholar of his time. He was proficient in all five major scripts: Haeseo (regular script), Haengseo (semi-cursive), and Choseo (cursive). He deeply studied the techniques of Ming Dynasty scholar Dong Qichang, completing his unique 'Seolju style,' characterized by its grandeur and mystique.

He maintained a life as a recluse, embodying the spirit of a righteous scholar, and continued his artistic activities. Famously, he did not put down his brush until the moment of his death, leaving behind the characters '一心' (One Heart) as his last work.

The content of these scrolls begins with the second verse of 'Mui Jeongsa Japyeong' by Zhu Xi, a renowned scholar of the Song Dynasty. The fourth scroll contains the lines:

"采藥忽迷路 千峰秋葉裏 山僧汲水歸 林末茶煙起"
(Picking herbs, I suddenly lost my way,
Amidst myriad peaks shrouded in autumn leaves.
A mountain monk returns, carrying water,
And tea smoke rises from the edge of the forest.)

This passage appears to be an excerpt from Yulgok Yi I's poem about life in the mountains, and its connection to tea makes it particularly valuable.

The final scroll is inscribed with 'Unrim Poong' and bears the seals 'Seolju Song Un-hwe Seo' and 'Seolju Seal'.

Condition: The first and second scrolls have minor holes, but these should not be noticeable after re-backing. Please refer to the 9th image.

Dimensions: Each scroll measures 105 x 32.5 cm. Total of six scrolls.

서예 행초의 달인이신 설주 송운회 선생의 묵서 6폭입니다.
설주 송운회 (1874~1965)선생은 구한말부터 일제강점기 6·25 전쟁의 격동기를 거치며 평생을 서예에 바친 근대 한국의 대표적인 서예가입니다.
전남 보성 출신으로 당대 대학자였던 영재 이건창의 문하에서 수학했습니다.
해서 행서 초서 등 5체에 모두 능했으며 명나라 문인 동기창의 필법을 깊이 연구하여 웅장하고 신비로운 설주체를 완성했습니다.
강직한 선비 정신으로 평생 야인으로 남아 작품 활동을 하였으며 임종 직전까지 붓을 놓지 않고 마지막 글씨로 一心 을 남긴 것으로 유명합니다.
본글씨는 小山幽桂叢 소산유계총으로 시작하는 송대의 대유학자 주희의 오언절구인 무이정사잡영 중 제2곡의 내용으로 시작하며 4번째 장은 採藥忽迷路 千峰秋葉裏 山僧汲水歸 林末茶煙起 채약홀미로 천봉추엽리 산승급수귀 임말다연기
내용은 약초를 캐다가 문득 길을 잃었는데
수많은 봉우리는 온통 가을 단풍에 휩싸여 있네.
산스님은 물을 길어 돌아오고
숲 끝자락너머로 차 달이는 연기가 모락모락 피어오른다.
는 뜻으로 율곡 이이 선생의 山中의 구절에서 발췌한듯 합니다.
茶와 관계되는 내용이 있어 귀한듯 합니다.
마지막 장 운림포옹 설주 송운회 서 인장 송운회인 설주 인장 보입니다.
상태는 첫째 두번째장 작은 구멍이 있으나 배접하면 표시는 안날듯 합니다.
