This ceramic pillow, with roots in Tang Sancai, is a low-temperature glazed pottery that developed during the Liao Dynasty (916-1125).

It is a typical ceramic pillow designed for resting the head, shaped as a slightly concave rectangular prism.

Ceramic pillows are known for their cool touch and were widely used primarily in the summer to relieve heat.

This piece is glazed overall with a deep yellow glaze in a brownish tone, which is also a common color combination in Yaozhou ware.

On the sides of the pillow, relief figures are carved, reflecting the dynamic sculptural style of the Tang or Liao dynasties. The surface where the head rests is delicately decorated with an incised floral scroll pattern.

Yaozhou ware can be understood as a product combining the robust spirit of the Khitan people with the sophisticated ceramic techniques of the Han Chinese. Like Tang Sancai, it primarily uses white, green, and yellow, but pieces predominantly in yellowish-brown, like this one, are also common.

당삼채에 그 뿌리를 두고 있는,
요나라(916~1125) 시기에 발전한 저온 유 도기이다.
형태상 가운데가 조금 오목하게 들어간 직육면체로
머리를 받치기에 적합하도록 고안된 전형적인 도자 베개이다.
도자 베개는 감촉이 차가워, 주로 여름철에 더위를 식히기 위한
용도로 널리 사용된 것으로 알려져 있다.
본 기물에는 전체적으로 갈색조의 짙은 황색의 유액이 시유되어 있는데,
이 역시 요삼채에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 색상 구성 중 하나이다.
한편, 베개의 측면에는 부조 형식으로 인물상이 새겨져 있는데
당대나 요대의 역동적인 조각 양식을 반영하고 있다고 보여지며
머리가 닿는 면에는 음각으로 보상화 전지문이 섬세하게 시문되어 있다.
요삼채는 거란족의 강인한 기풍과 한족의 정교한 도자 기술이 결합된
결과물로 이해할 수 있겠는데, 당삼채처럼 백색, 녹색, 황색을 기본으로 하며
본 기물과 같이 황갈색이 주를 이루는 경우도 많다.
