Ebony is extremely hard, making it difficult to carve, and ebony carvings are sold at high prices.
Despite its rough texture, the fine manual craftsmanship is artistic, capturing the form of the cabbage with detailed depictions of the leaves and the curled edges.
In Chinese, cabbage is called 'baicai' (白菜), a pronunciation very similar to 'baicai' (百财), which means 'hundred treasures'. Therefore, it is interpreted as a symbol of wealth flowing in from all directions, and cabbage carvings are often placed at the entrances of shops or businesses.
Particularly, cabbage carvings made from jade, ivory, and huaili wood are considered the best gifts for attracting wealth.

중국의 민국시기 전후 제작한것으로 추정되는 흑단 배추형 필통입니다.
흑단은 매우 단단하여 오래전부터 조각이 힘들며 흑단의 조각품은 고가에 판매되고 있습니다.
거칠지만 섬세한 수작업으로 배추의 형태와 끝부분에 말려들어간 표현이나 잎파리의 세밀한 묘사가 예술적입니다.
중국어로 배추는 백채(바이차이)라고 부르는데 이 발음이 백 가지 재물을 뜻하는 백재(百財)와 매우 유사하기 때문입니다.
돈이 사방에서 굴러 들어온다는 뜻으로 통하며 상점이나 기업 입구에 배추 조각상을 두는 경우가 많습니다.
특히 옥과 상아 화리목 등으로 만든 배추 조각상은 재복을 부르는 최고의 선물로
꼽힙니다.
크기는 높이 27 폭 15 입니다.
