This was the first 2,000 Yen banknote issued in Japan, coinciding with the 2000 Kyushu-Okinawa G8 Summit. The discontinuation is attributed to a rushed, somewhat event-driven decision made without sufficient review of the currency's circulation feasibility. The lack of ATM and vending machine compatibility with the 2,000 Yen denomination likely accelerated its removal from circulation.
