This is a rare, original 12-corner side table from the Gangwon Province of Korea.

### Historical Context:

Historically, small tables used for serving food were known by various names, including 'jo' (俎), 'jogwe' (俎机), and 'ban' (盤) before the Joseon Dynasty. During the Joseon Dynasty, terms like 'an' (案), 'sang' (床), 'tak' (卓), 'ban' (盤), and 'soban' (小盤) were used, with 'ban' sometimes referred to as 'pan' (板). The terms 'ban' and 'sang' became widely adopted, and eventually, 'soban' became the standard term regardless of size.

These tables consist of a flat tabletop (panmyeon) and legs. Many featured decorative carved railings below the tabletop and reinforcing central bands and footrests. The popularity of small, portable tables increased during the Joseon Dynasty due to Confucian ideals emphasizing individual meals ('dok-sang') rather than communal dining, and their suitability for the traditional Korean 'ondol' heated floor rooms with separate kitchens and living spaces.

Soban were categorized by the shape of their legs, such as 'gujoq-ban' (turtle-leg table), 'hojok-ban' (tiger-leg table), 'jukjeol-ban' (bamboo-joint table), and 'dan-gak-ban' (short-leg table).

### Features of this Gangwon-do Soban:

Unlike many soban where the tabletop ('cheonpan') is relatively thin, this table boasts a significantly thicker top, approximately 2 to 3 times thicker than average. This substantial thickness is a distinguishing feature and a testament to its robust construction.

A unique characteristic of Gangwon Province furniture is its construction from solid logs, often shaped with traditional tools like 'jjagu' (끌) rather than modern planers. This results in a textured surface with visible tool marks, adding to its rustic allure.

The thickness of the tabletop ensures remarkable stability, capable of supporting an adult's weight.

While historical pieces are often dated to the Joseon Dynasty, we conservatively estimate this table to be around 100 years old.

Distinguishing genuine age from artificial aging is crucial. This table displays authentic signs of age, such as the subtle indentations and the clear marks of saw blades on the underside of the tabletop, which cannot be replicated by modern techniques.

The 'jeon' (변죽), or edge, of the 12-corner tabletop is designed not only for decorative purposes but also to prevent liquids from spilling. Unlike the typically sharp, right-angled edges found on many soban, the edge of this table features a distinct, carved bevel, adding depth and sophistication to its appearance.

The legs, known as 'hojok' (호족) due to their resemblance to a tiger's ankle, are meticulously fitted into grooves on the underside of the thick tabletop without the use of metal nails, showcasing skilled joinery.

옛날 강원도 12각소반 입니다
식기를 올려 두었던 가구로 조선시대 이전에는 조(俎),
조궤(俎机),혹은 반(盤)이라는 이름이 전해지고 있다
조선시대에는 안(案),상(床),탁(卓),반(盤),소반(小盤)
등의 명칭을 찾을 수 있으며,또 반을 판(板)으로 지칭하
기도 하는 등 다양한 이름이 있었다~
그 중 '반'과 '상'이라는 명칭이 널리 쓰였고,이후 치수와
상관없이 '소반'이라는 명칭으로 굳어지게 되었다
형태는 평평한 반면(盤面)의 통판 널과 여기에 연결되는
다리로 이루어진다.
반(盤) 아래에는 여러 가지 조각이나 문양으로 장식한
난간이 있고,대부분의 경우에는 다리를 견고하게 하여
주는 중대(中帶)와 족대(足臺)가 있다.
이동하기 편리한 소형 상이 사용된 것은 조선시대 유교
이념인 남녀유별,장유유서,의 사상으로 겸상보다는 독상
이 주로 쓰였으며,공간적으로도 부엌과 방이 멀고 규모가
작으면서 좌식생활을 하는 한식 온돌방에 적합하였기
때문이다.

소반보다 2~3배 이상 두텁습니다

강원도 가구의 특징은 주로 통나무를 그당시 톱 으로
베어 표면을 다듬고 대패가 아닌 짜구(끌)로 쪼거나 파내
어 긁어낸 흔적이 울퉁불퉁 하기도 하며 거친듯 그러한
나무자국이 남아 있음이 더 큰 매력입니다
상판의 두께감만 비교 하자면 그 튼튼함은 성인이 올라
타도 견딜 만큼 안정적인 멋스러움이 공존합니다
사실 이 정도의 세월을 머금은 가구들은 조선시대로
설명해 판매하지만 그냥 백년정도다.겸손히 설명 드리는
취지입니다
옷칠로 나이 좀 있어 보이는 세월감의 고가구 들은
많이 있습니다만,주목해 관찰 하여야 하실 부분은 앞서
말씀드린 기계의 도움을 받은 매끄러운 가공의 흔적
인지 쪼아내고 파낸 과거의 단순한 연장(도구)의 가공
흔적과 비교해 보시면 아무리 세월을 속이려 해도
결코 그러한 세월감을 속일수 없음 입니다~
그러기에 실물을 보시면 상판과 상판의 아래바닥면
배면 으로 작은 상처처럼 곰보자국도 보이고 톱 날의
흔적도 뚜렷히 보실수 있겠습니다
또한 12각의 상판(천판)의 가장자리 둘레를 전(변죽)
이라고 하는데 음식의 물기를 엎질러도 밖으로 흘러내리
지 않는 역할과 장식의 연출을 고려한 조각입니다
일반소반의 경우 8각이나 12각의 변죽부분 아래로 거의
직각에 가깝게 단정히 조각을 손질 하나,자세히 보시면
대각선 으로 각의 깊이감이 경사져 있습니다
통판의 두꺼운 상판 옆면을 감싸듯 자칫 투박 하기만
할수있는 단조로움을 야무지고 똘똘한 기품을 더하는
명품으로 끌어 올렸다 평가할수 있겠지요
일반상판의 두께보다 두껍기에 대각의 깊이감이
더욱 입체적 이다~
상판 아래로 쇠못이 전혀 사용되지 않은 홈을 파고 칼집
을 넣어 판을 구부려 박아 호족다리에 끼워 맟춤으로
깔끔히 마무리 되었습니다
호랑이 발목을 닮았다 해서 호족이라 명칭됩니다
상판은 아주 두꺼운 통판으로 12각의 변죽,호족다리
의 기품까지~투박함 단아함 어쩌면 멋부리지 않은듯
백년을 더 화려하게 빛날수 있는 최고의 우리민속품
강원도 통판소반이 아닐런지요
참고로 나이가 짧은 재현품이나 인위적인 세월로 가공
한 색깔만 오래된듯 짝퉁급들을 제외 하고는...
오리지널 연대의 전통상의 경우 몇백만원... 왕실이나
종친의 가문에서 나온 유물은 일이천만원의 호가가 넘는
명품급 들이 실제 많습니다
