## Qi Baishi Scholar's Seal 'Qihuang' Ink and Wash Painting: Lotus Root and Insects

**Artist:** Qi Baishi (齊白石, 1864–1957)

**Dimensions:** Approximately 24.5cm (width) x 34.5cm (height)

**Medium:** Ink and light colors on paper

**Description:**

This exquisite *Chouchongdo* (insect and flower painting) depicts a lotus root and insects, rendered with bold yet simple ink strokes and delicate coloration. The upper portion of the painting features a lotus root, simply drawn with broad, freehand ink lines, revealing even the internal cross-section. Below it, a grasshopper is meticulously detailed with long antennae, delicate wings, and segmented legs.

While the lotus root is simplified with a free and bold brushwork, the grasshopper is depicted with fine lines and light brown pigments, realistically capturing the texture of its wings and the structure of its body and legs. The composition is minimalist, with ample negative space, placing the two subjects in dialogue to evoke a sense of rustic vitality and the essence of rural life.

Inscribed on the left side is what appears to be 'Qihuang' (齊璜), Qi Baishi's given name, accompanied by a red, square seal.

Qi Baishi, a renowned painter and seal engraver of modern China, hailed from Xiangtan, Hunan. His art frequently drew inspiration from the flora, fauna, and daily life of the countryside, including flowers, plants, vegetables, fruits, and insects. He is celebrated for his unique style, characterized by concise and powerful brushstrokes for everyday objects and finely observed, detailed depictions of insects.

This piece exemplifies Qi Baishi's signature *Chouchonghua* style, showcasing the striking contrast between the boldly rendered lotus root and the delicately painted grasshopper.

**Condition:**

The paper exhibits age-related discoloration, faint spotting, and minor wear along the edges. The artwork is preserved as a single sheet, unframed.
