[BUNJANG] Rare Ancient Buddhist Scripture - Neung-eom-gyeong Unhae Edition / 희귀 고서] 수백 년 세월을 간직한 법보- 능엄경 언해본

Presenting a rare copy of the Neung-eom-gyeong (Sutra of the Great Buddha's Summit Seal of Secret Essence for Cultivating the Practice of the Bodhisattva's Vast Conduct), believed to be several hundred years old.

This particular edition, commonly known as Neung-eom-gyeong, is officially titled 'Dae-bul-jeong-yeo-rae-mil-in-su-jeung-ryo-ui-je-bo-sal-man-haeng-su-reung-eom-gyeong'.

Despite being a woodblock print, the script is remarkably clear and distinct, resembling metal movable type or wood movable type, showcasing the exquisite printing technology of its era.

A noteworthy aspect is that it is an 'Unhae' (annotated Korean translation) version, featuring Korean vowel endings and guide marks ('gugyeol') carved between the characters. Neung-eom-gyeong Unhae editions are highly regarded for their rarity and historical significance, with some already designated as National Treasures.

While further research is needed to determine if these annotations were carved during the original printing or added later, this volume serves as an invaluable resource for understanding the reading practices and linguistic characteristics of the Korean language from that period.

The preservation state is exceptional. Despite its age, not a single page is missing, and the entire content remains intact. As evident in the photos, the scripture bears the patina and traces of practice from a Buddhist monk over centuries, evoking a sense of religious reverence.

To protect the now-thinned paper, a previous owner meticulously reinforced it by backing it with paper. This careful preservation ensures that the original text is perfectly legible today.

We hope this sacred artifact, imbued with the care and practice of its past custodians, finds a new owner who truly appreciates its profound value.

[희귀 고서] 수백 년 세월을 간직한 법보(法寶) - 능엄경 언해본
​수백 년 전 간행된 것으로 추정되는 귀한 능엄경 한 권을 소개합니다.

정확한 명칭은 대불정여래밀인수증료의제보살만행수릉엄경’으로, 흔히 능엄경이라 불리는 불경입니다.

이 판본은 목판본임에도 불구하고 마치 금속활자나 도활자본을 보는 듯 필치가 맑고 선명하며 인쇄 상태가 매우 정교하여 당시의 뛰어난 인쇄 기술을 고스란히 보여줍니다.

​특히 글자 사이에 한글 받침과 구결이 함께 새겨진 ‘언해본’ 계열이라는 점이 주목할 만합니다. 능엄경 언해본은 현재 보물로 지정된 판본이 있을 만큼 그 희귀성과 사료적 가치를 널리 인정받는 유물입니다.

인쇄 시 함께 새겨진 것인지 후대에 보충된 것인지는 연구가 필요하나, 당시 선조들의 독법과 국어학적 특징을 알 수 있는 매우 귀한 자료입니다.

​보존 상태 또한 훌륭합니다. 수백 년의 시간 속에서도 단 한 페이지의 유실 없이 전체 내용이 온전하게 남아 있습니다. 사진에서 확인되듯 오랜 시간 고승이 정진하며 남긴 손때와 수행의 흔적이 배어 있어 종교적인 경건함도 느껴집니다.

세월의 흐름으로 얇아진 종이를 보전하기 위해 과거 누군가가 직접 글을 써서 배접(보강)해 둔 덕분에, 현재 원본 내용을 완벽하게 식별할 수 있는 상태입니다.
