Pablo Casals, a Catalan cellist, is renowned for rediscovering the beauty of Bach's Unaccompanied Cello Suites. He received his initial music education from his father and later studied cello with José García and harmony with Rodoreda in Barcelona. He also studied chamber music with Jesús Monasterio and counterpoint with Thomas Bretón at the Madrid Conservatory. From 1895 to 1898, he was a cello soloist in the orchestra of the Paris Opera. From 1897, he was a cello professor at the Barcelona Conservatory.

Casals, who became a legendary figure in his lifetime, was one with the cello and dedicated to its promotion. He innovated bowing techniques and reached precise string techniques previously unknown. He explored the possibilities of the cello's high register, which had not been used until then. His performances were filled with nobility and profound sentiment, and Casals played a significant role in popularizing Bach's and Beethoven's cello works. He also founded and conducted the Pau Casals Orchestra in Barcelona and left behind more than 70 compositions, including the oratorio 'El Pessebre'.

바흐 무반주 첼로 모음곡의 아름다움을 재발견한 것으로 유명한 카탈루냐 출신의 첼리스트인 카잘스는 아버지로부터 최초의 음악교육을 받았고 이후 바르셀로나에서 호세 가르시아에게 첼로를, 로도레다에게 화성악을 배웠다. 이어 마드리드 음악원에서 헤수스 모나스테리오에게 실내악을, 토머스 브레튼에게 대위법을 배웠다. 1895년부터 1898년까지 파리 오페라 극장 관현악단에서 첼로의 솔리스트 1897년 이후에는 바르셀로나 음악원의 첼로 교수를 지냈다.
생전부터 이미 전설적인 인물이 된 카잘스는 보급에 헌신했던 첼로와 글자 그대로 하나였다. 그는 운궁법을 혁신했으며 그 이전에는 알지 못했던 정확한 조현법에 도달했다. 그리고 당시까지 전혀 쓰이지 않았던 첼로의 고음역에 관한 가능성을 탐구했다. 그의 연주에는 고결하고 심원한 시정이 흘러나왔고 카잘스는 바흐와 베토벤의 첼로 작품을 일반에게 보급하는 큰 역할을 하였다. 바르셀로나에서 파우 카잘스 오케스트라를 창단해 지휘자로도 활동했으며 오라토리오 '엘 페세브레'를 비롯, 70여 편의 창작곡을 남겼다.
