This is a set of the first Korean stamps, known as Munwi stamps, with a face value denominated in 'Mun,' the currency of the time.

The stamps were issued on October 1, 1884 (lunar calendar) and comprised five denominations: 5 Mun, 10 Mun, 25 Mun, 50 Mun, and 100 Mun. Of these, only the 5 Mun and 10 Mun were officially issued. The remaining three denominations arrived after the closure of the Postal Office and were never released.

These stamps were manufactured by the Japanese Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau, with the inscription 'Manufactured by the Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau of the Great Japanese Government' on the selvage of the stamp sheet. The 100 Mun stamp was printed in two colors, while the other four were single-colored.

The stamps feature the state name 'Great Joseon' and the term 'Ucho' instead of 'stamp.' Except for the 5 Mun stamp, the other four also include the English text 'COREAN POST.'

This set includes all five types and comes with the original explanatory documentation.

우리나라 최초의 우표로서 액면금액이 당시의 통용화폐인 ‘문(文)’으로 표시되어 있어 문위우표라고 한다.

당시 발행된 우표는 5문, 10문, 25문, 50문, 100문의 5종이며 발행 연월일은 1884년 음력 10월 1일이다. 이 우표들 가운데 5문과 10문은 예정대로 발행되었지만, 나머지 3종의 우표는 우정총국이 폐쇄된 이후에 도착했기 때문에 발행되지 못했다. 또한 발행된 우표들 역시 발ㅔ행 후 21일 만에 사용이 중지되는 비운의 우표가 되고 말았다. 문위우표는 일본에 위탁하여 대장성인쇄국에서 제조한 것으로 우표 전지의 주위 여백에 ‘대일본국정부 대장성인쇄국 제조’라고 씌어 있다. 이 우표들 가운데 100문은 2색 인쇄를 한 반면, 다른 4종의 우표는 단색으로 인쇄한 것들이다. 우표에는 ‘대조선국(大朝鮮國)’이나 이라는 국호와 우표라는 용어 대신 ‘우초’라는 용어가 씌어 있다. 또한 5문 우표를 제외한 나머지 4종의 우표에는 ‘COREAN POST’라는 영문자도 표기되어 있다.
