In Catholic liturgy, the chalice is the most sacred and important vessel used during Mass to hold the wine, which is transubstantiated into the Blood of Christ.

The word 'chalice' originates from the Latin word 'Calix,' meaning a cup or goblet. It transcends the meaning of a simple drinking vessel to become a central symbol of the Eucharist, a core tenet of the Catholic faith.

Its significance stems from Jesus Christ's words at the Last Supper, the night before his crucifixion: 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you' (Luke 22:20).

It is believed that during Mass, the wine in the chalice undergoes transubstantiation through the consecration by the Holy Spirit, becoming the true Blood of Christ while retaining its appearance (taste and form).

Therefore, the chalice symbolizes the 'cup of salvation,' representing the atonement for human sins.
