### Antique Joseon Dynasty Folk Painting "Eohaedo" (Fish and Birds) on Silk

This is a rare "Eohaedo" (Fish and Birds) folk painting created during the Joseon Dynasty. Executed with vibrant colors on a silk canvas, this piece is estimated to be quite old.

Paintings on silk from the Joseon era are highly sought after by folk art collectors due to the difficulty in creating convincing fakes. This particular artwork depicts four "ssogari" (mandarin fish), known in Hanja as 鱖 (gwol), gracefully swimming among rocks and foliage.

The character 鱖 (gwol) for mandarin fish shares the same pronunciation as 闕 (gwol), meaning palace. Consequently, in Joseon Dynasty folk art and paintings, the mandarin fish often symbolizes aspirations for success in officialdom and passing state examinations (ipsinyangmyeong and deunggwa).

This piece utilizes a combination of coloring and ink wash on silk. The condition of the silk threads, along with age-related discoloration, fold lines, and signs of wear, definitively indicates its antiquity.

Furthermore, its smaller size makes it exceptionally rare compared to larger works like folding screens.

The artwork is unframed with glass. There is a tear along the bottom edge from the moving process, but this is fully repairable through re-mounting.

조선시대 제작한 민화 어해도입니다
견바닥에 채색으로 그려져 있는 연대가 많이 올라가는 작품입니다.
견바닥의 조선시대 작품은 가품을 만들기에 힘들어 민화수집가가 좋아하는 경향이 있습니다.
본작품은 쏘가리로 불리는 궐어 4마마리가 괴석과 풀초에서 유유자적히 유영하고 있는 모습입니다.
쏘가리의 한자어인 鱖 궐은 궁궐이나 대궐을 뜻하는 闕 궐과 발음이 같습니다.
따라서 조선 시대 민화나 회화에서 쏘가리는 대궐에 들어가 관직을 얻는다 즉 입신양명과 등과를 기원하는 상징으로 가장 널리 쓰였습니다.
견바닥 위에 채색과 수묵을 병용한 작품으로 비단의 올 상태와 세월에 따른 갈변 접힘선 및 손상 흔적으로 보아 오래된 고화임에 틀림없습니다.
그리고 싸이즈가 소품인 작품이라 병풍의 한장짜리와 비교했을때 가치면에서 많이 귀합니다.
상태는 유리없는 액자이며 아랫부분 옮기는 과정에 째짐이 있으나 배접수리를 통해 완벽히 복구 가능합니다.
