**Album Introduction**

A meeting of two world authorities: Jordi Savall, the world's leading authority on early music, and Ton Koopman, a master of keyboard instruments. The jacket, which bears the names of these two giants, is enough to get you excited. But when you listen to their solid and profound interpretation, that excitement turns into deep emotion. It seems to contain the subtle fragrance of a centuries-old tree, and the more you listen, the deeper the taste becomes! It contains four sonatas by Bach for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Although numbered from 1 to 4, No. 4 is an arrangement of Organ Sonata No. 5 for viola da gamba. A common feature of all three other sonatas is that the harpsichord goes beyond the level of an accompanying instrument and plays an active role as a concertante (concerto) instrument. Especially the masterpiece of this album is Trio Sonata No. 3. The Adagio of the 2nd movement, which is neatly structured, is really beautiful. In the 3rd movement Allegro, the lingering impression that lingers where the viola has scratched seems to convey the words, 'The craftsmanship of a great musician is beyond play.'

세계 최고 권위의 두 초기음악학자, 조르디 사발과 톤 쿠프만의 만남. 타의 추종을 불허하는 비올의 대가와 건반악기의 대가. 두 거목의 이름을 나란히 쓴 재킷만 봐도 흥분된다. 그러나 그 튼튼하고 중후한 해석을 들으면 그 흥분은 심오한 감동으로 바뀐다. 수백년 묵은 고목의 은은한 향취를 담고 있는 듯 들을수록 깊은 맛을 낸다! 바흐의 비올라 다 감바와 쳄발로를 위한 소나타 4곡을 싣고 있는데, 번호상으로는 1번부터 4번이지만, 4번은 오르간 소나타 5번을 비올라 다 감바 버전으로 편곡한 것이다. 나머지 세 소나타들 모두의 공통적인 특징은 쳄발로가 반주악기 차원을 넘어 콘체르탄테(협주)악기로 맹활약을 하고 있다는 점이다. 특히 이 음반에서 가장 주목되는 걸작 중의 걸작은 트리오 소나타인 제3번. 기막힌 구조로 담백하게 짜여진 2악장 아다지오는 정말 아름답다. 3악장 알레그로에서, 비올이 할퀴고 간 곳에 모락모락 피어난 기다란 여운은, 마치 '위대한 음악가의 장인정신은 유희를 넘어선 곳에 있다'는 말을 전하는 듯하다.
