"COSMONAUT" is the highly anticipated studio album from BUMP OF CHICKEN, released approximately three years after their previous work, "orbital period." Originally conceived with a title related to a letter to an astronaut, the album ultimately adopted its current name after a single with the same title was released prior.

「COSMONAUT」은, BUMP OF CHICKEN의 메이저 4번째 (통산 6번째) 의 오리지날 앨범. 2010년 12월 15일에 토이즈 팩토리에서 발매되었다.
전작 orbital period 이후 약 3년 만의 스튜디오 앨범. 
당초 제목을 우주인에게 보내는 편지로 할 예정이었으나 먼저 싱글로 같은 제목의 작품을 내놓게 됐기에 현재의 것이 됐다. 동봉 특전으로 오리지널 스티커, 연동 특전 응모 추첨권이 동봉.
15th싱글 2곡째의 「Merry Christmas」는, A면곡이지만 앨범에 수록되지 않은 예는 이것이 처음이다.
자켓 디자인은 타이쿤 그래픽스. 아티스트 사진도 되는 멤버 4명이 잔디밭에 서 있는 사진은 도쿄 독일 마을에서 촬영되었다. 또한 지금까지 출시된 작품들과 달리내부의 플라스틱 케이스가 흑백이 아닌 투명해, 안의 재킷이 보이게 되어 있다. 덧붙여 북클릿내의 「분별 분투기」의 가사의 오른쪽 페이지에는, 나오이 유문이 망원경을 이용해 촬영한 굴뚝의 사진이 사용되고 있다.
레이블면의 디자인은 보이저의 골든 레코드에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다.
수록곡 수(19곡) 및 총수록 시간(79분 04초)은 1979년생 4인이라는 뜻이다.
