**Overview:**

THE LIVING DEAD is the second indie album by BUMP OF CHICKEN. Originally released on March 25, 2000, by High Line Records, a reissue was later released by Toys Factory on April 28, 2004. This album is structured as a concept album, telling a story throughout its tracks.

**Production:**

Most of the lyrics and music were created during a concentrated period from the fall of 1999 to the spring of 2000. The recording process for the album's songs took approximately one week. In a unique approach, the band recorded vocals without pre-written melodies or lyrics, with Fujiwara later adding them while listening to the instrumental tracks. The songs "Opening" and "Ending" were adapted from the previously written song "Present."

**Concept & Title:**

The album was created during a challenging period marked by demanding schedules, contract issues, and significant pressure. The title "THE LIVING DEAD" (산송장 - Living Corpse) reflects the band's state of being at that time, embodying their raw and unfiltered selves.

**Artwork:**

It is speculated that the figure depicted on the jacket art is the "Rough Maker," a mysterious character who appears to turn a crying person into a smiling one, as mentioned in the coupling track "Rough Maker" from the "Diamond" single.

​THE LIVING DEAD는 BUMP OF CHICKEN의 인디 2집 앨범.
2000년 3월 25일 하이라인 레코즈에서 발매되었으며 메이저 데뷔 후인 2004년 4월 28일에는 재발판이 토이즈팩토리에서 발매되었다.
콘셉트 앨범전편 이야기 형식의 악곡으로 차지하고 있다.
거의 모든 곡의 작사, 작곡, 녹음은 1999년 가을부터 2000년 봄까지라는 비교적 짧은 제작 기간 동안 집중적으로 이루어졌다. 그중에서도 앨범 곡 녹음 기간은 약 일주일 정도 되고, 멤버는 멜로디도 가사도 없는 상태로 노래 녹음을 실시해, 그 인스트로 음원을 들으면서 후지와라가 나중에 멜로디와 가사를 붙이는 스타일로 만들어졌다.
「Opening」「Ending」에 있어서는, 원래 쓰고 있던 곡 「선물」에서 「Opening」「Ending」의 역할을 하기 위해 추출해 왔다. (덧붙여 「선물」은 2008년에 완전판이 레코딩되어 동년의 앨범『present from you』에 수록되어 있음)
바쁜 스케줄, 계약 문제, 기타 여러 가지 중압에 시달리던 암흑기였으며, '그 당시 우리의 그대로'를 나타내는 말로 'THE LIVING DEAD' (산송장)라는 이름이 붙었다.
재킷에 그려져 있는 남성은 「러프·메이커」( 「다이아몬드」의 커플링곡 「러프·메이커」에 등장하는, 울고 있는 사람을 웃는 얼굴로 하기 위해서 나타나는 수수께끼의 인물)이라고 하는 설이 있다.
