This is a brass seal (전각) engraved by artist Jeong Go-am, created in 2007 to commemorate the publication of the complete works of Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan.

It is an exceptionally heavy piece of brass.

The artist, Go-am Jeong Byeong-rye (80), began his artistic journey by challenging conventional ideas about seals.

In the early 1970s, while working in a garment factory, he was inspired by seal engraving. The idea struck him that he could create three-dimensional designs not just on the bottom but on all sides of the seal. At 27, he seized the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an artist.

Go-am emphasizes the importance of living as one's own master. He believes that merely following established paths is the characteristic of a craftsman, not an artist. Artists, he argues, need unique content that reveals their identity.

His works embody this philosophy. After observing seals engraved only on the bottom, he conceived of works covering all six surfaces. In 2006, he founded 'Saegim Art' (Engraving Art), elevating 'jeongak' (seal engraving), traditionally limited to Chinese seal script characters, into an art of 'engraving' itself. He proved through his work that the notion that phonetic scripts like Hangeul could never surpass logographic scripts like Chinese characters in the art of jeongak was flawed. All his creations are the result of subverting existing norms.

'Saegim Art' refers to engraving not just on physical objects but also in one's heart and mind, preserving memories and records. It is about creating or discovering new order through these engravings.

'Jeongak' traditionally refers to the purely oriental art of imprinting one's sincerity within the limited space of a seal, using the highly graphic seal script (篆書體). While some consider it a derivative of calligraphy due to its name, jeongak can encompass not only seal script but also images and patterns. Furthermore, it is not restricted to Chinese characters; Hangeul and English can also be engraved, and it remains jeongak.

인장(印章)은 왜 밑면에만 새길까?' 당연해 보이는 사실을 뒤집는 데서 고암(古巖) 정병례 작가(80)의 예술 인생은 비롯했다. 의류 공장에서 일하던 1970년대 초, 그는 우연히 접한 인장 작업에서 영감을 얻었다. '아랫면뿐 아니라 육면에 걸쳐 글씨와 그림을 입체적으로 새길 수 있겠다'는 생각이 머리를 스쳤을 때 그는 어린 시절부터 마음속에 품어 온 예술인으로서의 삶을 드디어 펼쳐낼 기회를 포착했다. 전각에 입문하던 그해, 그의 나이 27세였다.

고암은 '주인으로서의 삶'을 강조한다. 이미 만들어진 길을 그대로 답습하기만 하는 것은 예술인이 아닌 기능인의 자세라는 게 고암의 지론이다. 예술가라면 자신의 정체성을 드러낼 수 있는 자기만의 콘텐츠가 필요하다는 주장이다.

실제로 그의 작품은 이 같은 문제의식에서 탄생하고 변화했다. 그는 밑면만 새긴 인장을 보고 육면의 작품을 떠올렸다. 2006년 '새김아트'를 창시하면서, 전서체(篆書體) 한자만 새겨야 하는 것으로 여겨지던 전각(篆刻)을 '새김'의 예술로 끌어올렸다. 한글이 제아무리 뛰어난 문자 체계라도 전각예술 특성상 표음문자인 한글은 상형문자인 한자를 절대 이길 수 없다는 명제가 잘못됐음을 그는 작품으로써 증명해 보였다. 모두 기존의 것들을 뒤집은 결과물이다. 아이디어의 원천이 자신의 생각을 끊임없이 반전시키는 데 있다는 그의 말은 평소 지론에서 나온 자연스러운 결과다.

―새김아트란 무엇인가?
▷'새김'이라는 것은 '마음에 새기다' '가슴에 새기다' 등 어떤 것을 기억하고 기록하는 걸 뜻한다. 그걸 모아 새로운 질서를 창출하거나 발견하기 위해 만든 게 '새김아트'다. 새김은 단순히 물질에다만 새기는 것이 아니고 마음에 새기는 것이다.

―전각이란 무엇인가?
▷한자의 서체 중 가장 조형성이 짙은 전서체(篆書體)를 구사해 인(印)이라고 하는 한정된 세계에, 한정된 공간에 사람의 정성을 심는 동양 순수예술을 가리켜 전각이라고 부른다. 전서를 새긴다는 그 어원 때문에 혹자는 전각을 서예의 아류로 여기기도 한다. 하지만 전각은 전서뿐만 아니라 그림, 문양 모든 걸 새길 수 있다. 또 한자만 새기는 게 아니라 한글, 영문도 새길 수 있다. 그래도 여전히 전각이다.
