This exquisite wooden inkstone (목연, Mokyeon) features a dignified carved lion playfully interacting with a treasure orb (보구, Bogu), symbolizing good fortune. The lion's rounded, expressive eyes, slightly parted mouth, and humorous expression convey a friendly and auspicious image, believed to ward off misfortune and invite blessings.

The ink grinding area (연당, Yeondang) and the ink reservoir (연지, Yeonji) are distinctly separated. The piece rests on four stable feet, showcasing the natural wood grain and meticulous carving that form a harmonious base.

Crafted from either Zitan or large-leaf Huanghuali wood, this artifact is estimated to be from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China period. Carved from a single piece of wood, its artistry and rarity are remarkable. The bold, rustic charm makes it an excellent decorative object.

기물 상단부에 복을 상징하는 보구(寶球)를 갖고 노는(유구, 遊球)
사자가 당당하게 통조각 되어 있는 목연(木硯)입니다.
둥글둥글하고 부리부리한 눈매, 살짝 벌린 입과
해학적인 표정은 친근하고 상서로운 사자의 모습으로
화를 막고 복을 부르는 상징이었습니다.
먹을 가는 공간인 연당(묵당)과 먹물을 가두는 연지는
완전히 분리되어 깎여 있고, 바닥에는 안정감을 주는
네 개의 발이 나무의 질감과 칼맛을 머금은 채
이 단을 형성하며 조화롭게 전체를 받치고 있습니다.
자단 혹은 대엽황화리로 제작된 본 기물은
청말민국 초의 작품으로 추정되는데,
하나의 통나무를 깎아 작품성과 희소성이 돋보이며
대범하고 투박한 멋이 살아 있어 장식용 오브제로도
훌륭한 가치가 있다고 봅니다.
