## Antique Chinese Celadon Medicine Mortar & Pestle

This exquisite mortar and pestle set, crafted primarily from provincial jade, features a design inspired by ancient Chinese bronze work. The mortar, measuring 22cm in diameter and 15.5cm in height, weighs 3.5kg. Its wide top and deep interior are characteristic of traditional tools used for grinding medicinal herbs and refining elixirs.

**Materials & Craftsmanship:**

The mortar is made from a blend of materials including serpentine jade, which is known for its moderate hardness, fine texture, and excellent wear resistance, ensuring it doesn't harm medicinal ingredients. The distinctive "monster face" (괴면) design on the body is a simplified jade carving style, mimicking that of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The symmetrical beast-head handles are not only decorative but also symbolize warding off evil and promoting health. The rim features a subtle, clean ribbed pattern.

**Functionality & Symbolism:**

Designed for grinding herbs, cinnabar, and minerals, the deep interior prevents powder from scattering. Jade's stable chemical properties ensure it won't react with medicinal substances, making it superior to mortars made of stone, copper, or ceramic. The "sleep pattern" (수면문) on the surface historically signified calming evil and protecting the medicine, with the beast heads believed to block extraneous odors from the herbs. Ancient Daoists particularly favored jade mortars for elixir refinement.

**Aesthetic:**

The piece is covered in a naturalistic pattern of ochre and pale gray-white calcified shell, with dappled markings that give it the appearance of an unearthed ancient jade artifact. The carvings and interior show signs of manual processing, including tool marks and drilled holes, typical of ancient craftsmanship.

**Condition:**

The overall finish is smooth and matte, with natural wear. The edges and protruding beast heads exhibit a soft sheen from prolonged use and polishing, indicating its age and historical significance. The pestle, likely made from a strong wood like Huali wood, is not included but would have complemented the set's functionality.

This mortar and pestle is a functional antique piece, perfect for collectors or those seeking a historically significant item for display or practical use.
