[BUNJANG] Early Joseon Dynasty White Porcelain Bowl / 백자발

An early Joseon Dynasty white porcelain bowl.

This piece is distinguished by its natural beauty, enhanced by subtle bluish glaze drips that have flowed from the inner walls to the base, complemented by fine crackles.

The thick, bluish glaze running down the walls evokes the 'cheongsagi' (blue-green ware) mentioned by King Sejo of Joseon. Historical records suggest King Sejo commanded the Ministry of Finance, stating, "The Crown Prince's Palace should not use white porcelain but should instead produce and offer cheongsagi."

While it remains unclear whether this 'cheongsagi' refers to buncheong ware or 'Joseon celadon' (celadon glaze applied to white porcelain clay), official kilns did produce small quantities of celadon. These were likely vessels for the Crown Prince's Palace (Donggung).

The "Gyeongguk Daejeon Juhae" (Commentary on the National Code) states, "The King's royal table uses white porcelain, while the Crown Prince's Palace uses blue-green ware."

The interior base features a slightly raised clay support from firing, which is advantageous for whisking matcha. The firing support marks are also visible on the foot.

This vessel exhibits a subtle blush of 'honghwa' (reddish discoloration) near the outer rim, and the irregular flow of the glaze adds to its aesthetic appeal.

The foot and its surrounding area are in their original state, and the contrast between the glazed surface and the clay color is elegantly striking.

There is a minuscule amount of kiln glaze within the snail-shell-like depression of the foot's interior, but its shallow depth poses no issues for durability or use.

조선 초기 백자발이다.
내벽에서 내저로 파르스름하게 흘러내린 유액에
빙렬까지 더해 자연스런 아름다움이 두드러지는 기물이다.
기벽을 타고 흘러내린 두툼한 푸른 빛 유액은
조선 세조가 언급한 '청사기'를 떠올리게 하는데,
세조는 호조에 "동궁에서는 백사기를 쓰지 말고,
청사기를 구워 바치게 하라"고 전교(명령)하였다고 전한다.
이 '청사기'가 분청사기를 말하는 것인지, 아니면
백자 태토에 청자 유액을 시유한 '조선청자'를 말하는 것인지
정확히 알 수는 없으나, 관요에서도 소량의 청자를 만들었으니,
이는 세자가 활동하는 동궁(東宮)에 쓸 그릇이었다.
경국대전주해에는 “임금의 수라상에는 백자기를 쓰고
동궁에서는 청기를 쓴다”고 적혀있다. ......
내저에는 포개 구운 태토빚음 받침이 살짝 솟아 있어
말차 제조에 유리하고,
굽에도 태토빚음 받침을 떼어낸 흔적이 남아있는 이 기물은
외벽 구연부 인근에 은은한 홍화가 피어나고 있을 뿐 아니라
불규칙한 유액의 흐름도 미감을 더하고 있다.
굽과 그 주위는 노태상태로
유액이 시유된 부분과 태토 색이 대비되는 점도 멋스럽다.
굽 내저의 달팽이관 안에 미세 가마유가 있으나
깊이가 얕아 내구성과 사용에 전혀 문제가 되지 않는다.
크기는 높이 약 8.5, 입지름 18.2 cm이고
상태는 유수리 없이 완전하다.
