## Gangwondo Wonbansang Paulownia Wood Table

This is a rare Paulownia wood Wonbansang (traditional Korean small table) from the Gangwon-do region, estimated to be around 100 years old. It features a traditional lacquer finish.

### Craftsmanship:

The defining characteristic of Gangwondo Wonbansang is its unique creation method. Using a traditional potter's wheel technique (log-wheel crafting), the table is meticulously hollowed out and shaped from a single block of wood. This manual process, unlike modern machinery, leaves distinctive tool marks on the wood grain, particularly visible on the tabletop. These marks create a unique visual texture, reminiscent of the lines left on pottery made with a potter's wheel.

### Design Features:

* **Solid Construction:** Unlike many similar tables where the base is hollowed out, this table features a solid, non-hollowed base made from a single piece of wood.
* **Stabilized Base:** The support base is designed with a two-tiered structure, featuring a slightly wider, carved lower tier for enhanced stability, preventing wobbling during use.
* **Lightweight Paulownia Wood:** Despite its solid construction, the use of Paulownia wood makes the table remarkably lightweight and easy to handle, even with one hand.
* **Pest Resistance:** Paulownia wood is naturally resistant to insects, ensuring durability and preventing damage from woodworms.
* **Functional Tabletop:** The tabletop has a raised rim, designed with a double-banded edge and a slightly deeper center. This feature is believed to prevent liquids or food from spilling over the sides.

### Condition:

Given its age, there is some natural wear on the lacquer finish, consistent with its historical provenance. The primary noted imperfection is a minor crack on the underside of the tabletop, which has been professionally repaired with metal brackets to prevent further spreading. Faint signs of touch-up paint are visible around the repair area. Aside from this, the table is in good condition with no other significant damage.

옛날 강원도지역 에서 제작된 오동나무 원반상입니다
옻칠 마감으로 되어 있구요
강원도원반상의 특징은 오래전 로구로 제작기법 이라
해서 쉽게 설명드리면 도자기 제작시 물레를 돌리는
것처럼 현재의 첨단기계가 아닌 수동으로 회전 시키는
도구로 뾰족한 칼날이 달린 전용 도구를 이용해
통나무 속안(내부)을 파내고 깎아 다듬었기에
원반상은 회전자국이 나무결에 남아 있습니다
상판의 중심도 자세히 보시면 수작업 으로 긁어낸
나무결이 보이실 거예요~
그러기에 독특한 시각적 질감의 멋스러움이 있습니다
도자기 물레선 물레결 같은 흔적 이지요
소개 올리는 원반상의 특징은 바닥을 지탱하는 받침부분
이 속안이 비어있지 않은 바닥이 막힌 진짜 통나무
이구요 (대부분 바닥이 뚫린 파낸게 많음)
바닥 받짐기둥도 2단으로 외부로 한단 좀더 넓게
조각해 멋을 부리고 사용시 기우뚱 거림이 없게 안정적
인 기능도 보강되었습니다
전체 통나무 이기에 무거워 사용하기 불편 했겠지만
오동나무 라서 아주 가볍습니다
한손 으로 들어도 됩니다
또한 오동나무가 해충에 강하기에 좀벌레의 부식도
없구요
상판(천판)도 보시면 조선시대 화로 처럼 끝부분의
원형둘레를 안쪽 보다 높게 두줄로 띠를 두르고 중심은
조금더 깊이감 있게 보이실 거예요
국물이나 음식물의 흘림이 바깥으로 쏟아지지 않게
고안 된거로 생각됩니다
상태의 세밀한 부분을 설명 드리자면~
세월이 있기에 희끗한 옷칠의 마모는 오랜세월의 흔적
으로 봐주시고요
하자 부분은 참고사진과 동영상의 빨간선 부분 일부분
으로 통나무 특성상 자연크릭이 있습니다
미세하게 관통되어 벌어진 것이며 사용 하면서 보수된
흔적으로 상판 아래쪽 철물(꺽쇠못)로 벌어짐이
진행되지 않게 박혀 있고 그부분 주변으로 감추고자
칠자국 살짝 엿보입니다
그외는 특별한 훼손은 없으며~
