## Goryeo Dynasty Celadon 'Gat' Tea Bowl

**Period:** Tang Dynasty / Five Dynasties (Yue Ware)

**Dimensions:**
* Diameter: 13.5 cm
* Height: 4.8 cm

**Description:**
This 'gat' (conical hat) shaped tea bowl, characteristic of the Yue Ware from the Tang and Five Dynasties period, showcases a classic form with an open aperture. The rapidly tapering walls and a rounded base give it the distinctive appearance of a conical hat, a popular drinking vessel form during that era.

These bowls were favored for tea consumption, allowing for rapid heat dissipation, making it easier to observe the tea's color and to froth the tea. Similar vessels were also used during the Song and Yuan dynasties.

**Features:**
* **Exterior Markings:** Faint linear patterns on the exterior walls suggest ancient handcrafted origins.
* **Glaze:** The interior boasts a subtle, translucent blue-green glaze, typical of Yue Ware's classic 'celadon' or 'egg shell blue'. This glaze is filled with natural, fine crackles. The crazing on the interior is stained with a warm, earthy brown from the clay body, indicating age and exposure to thermal shock and environmental erosion.
* **Surface Imperfections:** The glaze surface has small, scattered black specks, consistent with impurities in the ancient kiln's clay body and ash deposits, characteristic of high-temperature firing in ancient Yue kilns.
* **Base:** The base is flat with no glaze on the exterior foot, revealing a brownish-yellow clay body. There are dark brown kiln sparks adhering to the rim of the foot. This indicates the traditional Yue Ware stacking method (firing multiple bowls stacked together to prevent glazing on the foot), a hallmark of kilns from the Tang and Five Dynasties period in Zhejiang.

**Attribution and Context:**
This piece belongs to the Yue Ware celadon system (ancient kilns in Shangyu, Zhejiang). While similar tea bowls were produced by Korean kilns during the same period, often imitating Yue Ware, the clay, glaze, and basic craftsmanship of this bowl are closely related to Chinese Tang and Five Dynasties Yue Ware 'gat' bowls.

It is a distinctive example, predating the development of inlaid celadon techniques in Korea, though it shares some similarities. It is often referred to as both a Chinese Yue Ware piece and a Korean celadon tea bowl due to the close interaction and influence between the kilns during that era.

**Condition:**
Apart from a few minor, almost imperceptible glaze imperfections on the interior which do not catch a fingernail, the bowl is in excellent condition, showing normal wear and tear consistent with its age and use. The rim edge has a few very minor, natural imperfections consistent with centuries of use and wear.
