The Grateful Dead were a legendary American band formed in 1965, symbolizing the hippie culture and psychedelic rock of the 1960s. They are considered the originators of the modern 'Jam Band' due to their unique fusion of blues, folk, country, and jazz, and their extended improvisational jams.

Key aspects of the Grateful Dead:
* **Musical Characteristics and Live Performance Improvisation:** Focused more on live performances than studio recordings, extending songs for over 30 minutes with improvisation, creating a unique experience at every show. They contributed to advancements in stage technology, such as developing the "Wall of Sound" massive speaker system.
* **Dedicated Fandom:** Their devoted fanbase, known as "Deadheads," formed a unique counterculture, with many quitting their jobs to follow the band's tour bus across the country.
* **Fashion and Design Iconography:** Beyond music, the Grateful Dead's visual language has inspired modern streetwear and lifestyle brands. Iconic imagery includes "Dancing Bears" (colorful bear characters) and "Steal Your Face" (a skull with lightning), as well as tie-dye patterns representing their free-spirited ethos.
* **Core Members and Dissolution:** Jerry Garcia was the band's spiritual leader, frontman, and lead guitarist. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Following Jerry Garcia's death in 1995, the band officially disbanded, though remaining members continued to perform under names like "Dead & Company."
