[BUNJANG] Jangjuyo Baekjicheolhwa Poem Calligraphy Pen Case / 자주요백지흑화시문필통

This pen case from Jangjuyo is crafted using the Baekjicheolhwa technique. The piece was shaped, coated with white slip, and then decorated with iron-rich pigments before being glazed and fired. Jangjuyo, which was widely distributed in northern China from the Song dynasty through the Yuan and Ming dynasties, is closely related to Buncheong ware, which existed in Korea for about 150 years between Goryeo celadon and Joseon white porcelain.

Unlike the official kilns, it exudes unadorned simplicity and gentleness, reflecting the individuality of various potters, even giving a sense of freedom. The clay body of this piece is somewhat rough and reddish-brown, unlike the fine, grayish-white clay of the Song dynasty. The foot is flat and somewhat rough, similar to those of the Ming dynasty, unlike the Song dynasty's precise finishing. A five-character quatrain is written in regular script on the body, giving a folk feel of the Ming dynasty rather than the classical, neat feeling of the Song dynasty. However, the poem perfectly suits the pen case, one of the 'four treasures of the study,' metaphorically expressing the unwavering heart of a scholar, which is quite impressive!

Phenomena such as the dripping, iron stains, and pigment showing on the glaze are also characteristics found in Ming dynasty folk kilns. This piece was likely created in response to the increased demand for stationery after the mid-Ming dynasty. The size is approximately 12 cm in height and 11.1 cm in diameter, and the condition is perfect.

본 기물은
백지철화기법으로 제작한 자주요 필통으로,
만들고자 하는 모양으로 성형한 후
백색 화장토를 입히고
그 위에 철분이 함유된 안료로 시문한 뒤
투명유를 발라 소성하였다.
자주요는 송대에서 원대를 거쳐 명대에 이르기까지
중국 북부 지역에서 가장 널리 유통된 도자기로,
우리나라의 고려청자와 조선백자 사이의
약 150 여년을 자리하는 분청사기와도 깊은 연관이 있는
도자기이다.
관요가 아니다 보니
꾸밈없는 소박함과 부드러움이 묻어 나고
다양한 도공들의 개성도 표출되어 있어
자유분방한 느낌마저 준다.
본 기물의 태토는
송대의 입자가 고운 회백색 태토와 달리
다소 거칠고 붉은 기운이 도는 갈색이고,
굽 깍기도, 굽 안쪽까지 정교하게 마무리하는 송대와 달리
평평하고 다소 거친 명대의 굽에 가깝다 하겠다.
동부에는 5언절구 시가 해서체로 쓰여 있는데,
송대의 고전적인 단정한 느낌 보다는
이웃 집 왕서방의 필체같은, 민속적인 명대의 느낌이 강하다.
그러나 시(詩)는 문방사우 중 하나인 '필통'에 너무나 잘 어울리는 내용인데,
세파에 흔들리지 않는 선비의 굳건한 마음을 은유적으로
잘 표현하고 있어 멋지다!
유면에서 볼 수 있는 종안, 철수현상 그리고
안료가 유면 위로 드러난 현상 등도
명대 민요에서 볼 수 있는 특징이다.
본 기물은 명 중기 이후 늘어난 문방구 수요에
호응하기 위해 제작된 기물 중 하나였을 것이다.
크기는 높이 약 12, 지름 11.1 센티미터이고
상태는 완전하다.
