Jim Hall, born in Buffalo, USA, on December 4, 1930, was influenced by musicians like Art Tatum and Lennie Tristano from a young age. He began his professional music career in Cleveland and later studied classical guitar with Vincent Gomez in LA.
From 1956 to 1959, Hall performed with the Jimmy Giuffre Three and collaborated with Bill Evans and Sonny Rollins. In 1972, the duo album with Ron Carter helped to restore Jim Hall's reputation, leading to sessions and solo albums.

**짐 홀은 1930년 12월 4일 미국 버팔로에서 태어났다. 어릴 때부터 음악을 좋아했던 그는 아트 테이텀, 테디 윌슨, 레니 트리스타노 등을 들으며 자랐다. 어릴 때 부터 배움에의 욕구가 왕성해 도움이 된다고 생각되는 음반이나 음악들을 닥치는 대로 모으고 들었다. 10대부터 짐 홀은 클리블랜드 일대에서 직업적으로 음악활동을 하기 시작했고, 얼마 후엔 클리블랜드 음악학교에서 1955년에 학사학위를 받았다. 그후 짐 홀은 보다 큰 곳에서 음악활동을 하고 싶어 LA로 이주, 거기서 빈센트 고메즈를 만나 함께 클래식 기타를 공부했다.
1956년에서 1959년까지 짐 홀은 Jimmy Giuffre Three와 연주하였고, 계속해서 빌 에반스, 소니 롤린스 등과도 연주를 하며 음악적인 경력을 쌓아갔다. 그러나 짐 홀은 바쁜 음악활동으로 인해 술을 많이 마셔대 결국 알콜중독에 빠져 얼마동안 쉬지 않으면 안되었다. 1972년에 재즈 베이시스트 론 카터와 함께 제작한 듀오앨범은 짐 홀의 명성을 회복시켜준 역작으로 평가받았고 이어서 그는 여기저기 세션활동과 솔로앨범 등을 제작하며 빛나는 명연들을 쏟아내었다.
