## The "Munwi" Stamp Series: Korea's First Postage Stamps

This collection features the "Munwi" series, marking Korea's first official postage stamps. The denomination is expressed in "Mun" (文), the currency of the time, hence the name "Munwi" stamps.

### Historical Significance:

Originally intended as a set of five denominations (5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 Mun), these stamps were slated for release on October 1, 1884 (Lunar Calendar). While the 5 and 10 Mun stamps were issued as planned, the remaining three denominations arrived after the closure of the Post Office Directorate and were thus never officially issued. Tragically, even the issued stamps ceased to be usable just 21 days after their release.

### Production and Design:

Manufactured under contract with Japan by the Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau, the stamps feature text along the margins of the sheet indicating "Manufactured by the Ministry of Finance Printing Bureau, Great Japanese Government." The 100 Mun stamp is distinguished by its two-color printing, while the other four denominations are single-color.

Inscriptions include "Great Korean Empire" (大朝鮮國) and the term "Ucho" (우초), rather than the modern term for stamp. Notably, the "COREAN POST" English text appears on four of the five types, excluding the 5 Mun stamp.

우리나라 최초의 우표로서 액면금액이 당시의 통용화폐인 ‘문(文)’으로 표시되어 있어 문위우표라고 한다.

당시 발행된 우표는 5문, 10문, 25문, 50문, 100문의 5종이며 발행 연월일은 1884년 음력 10월 1일이다. 이 우표들 가운데 5문과 10문은 예정대로 발행되었지만, 나머지 3종의 우표는 우정총국이 폐쇄된 이후에 도착했기 때문에 발행되지 못했다. 또한 발행된 우표들 역시 발ㅔ행 후 21일 만에 사용이 중지되는 비운의 우표가 되고 말았다. 문위우표는 일본에 위탁하여 대장성인쇄국에서 제조한 것으로 우표 전지의 주위 여백에 ‘대일본국정부 대장성인쇄국 제조’라고 씌어 있다. 이 우표들 가운데 100문은 2색 인쇄를 한 반면, 다른 4종의 우표는 단색으로 인쇄한 것들이다. 우표에는 ‘대조선국(大朝鮮國)’이나 이라는 국호와 우표라는 용어 대신 ‘우초’라는 용어가 씌어 있다. 또한 5문 우표를 제외한 나머지 4종의 우표에는 ‘COREAN POST’라는 영문자도 표기되어 있다.
