### About the Vinyl

Leoš Janáček was a Czech composer who served as conductor of the Brno Philharmonic Society and founded and directed the Brno Organ School. He is known for his distinctive style of incorporating nationalistic themes into modern musical language, with notable works including the operas *Jenůfa* and *Taras Bulba*.

#### Destiny (Osud)

Composed in 1905, *Destiny* is Janáček's fourth opera. Its creation coincided with the tragic death of his daughter, Olga, at the age of 49. While it might seem like a work born from grief, the opera's narrative is more complex. It features a composer and his child, but deviates from a direct reflection of Janáček's personal sorrow.

*Destiny* is a remarkably unique work. Despite its relatively short duration (under 74 minutes), it is filled with experimental melodies and vocal techniques. While not all of its experimental elements may appeal to every listener, the orchestral depictions of the scenes are stunningly fluid. The opera also heavily features Janáček's signature Speech-Melody Theory, which, while characteristic, can sometimes lead to lengthy spoken-sung passages that might feel monotonous to some listeners if not actively engaged with the libretto. This demanding nature of the opera meant it was not performed during Janáček's lifetime.

It received its premiere six years after Janáček's death, through a radio production in 1936. The next performance wasn't until 1958, 22 years later. Following a production in Stuttgart, *Destiny* has become a more frequently staged work, though its performance history in South Korea is limited.

체코의 작곡가로 브르노필하모니협회의 지휘자를 지내고 브르노오르간학교를 세워 교장을 맡았다. 민족적 소재를 근대적 음악어법으로 처리하여 오페라 《예누 파》, 《타라스 불바》 등의 작품을 남겼다.

네번째 오페라, <운명>

1903년, 야나첵의 나이 49세 때, 딸 올가가 세상을 등집니다. 야나첵은 슬픔을 이겨내려는 듯, 딸의 친구 페도라 바르토조바와 함께 네번째 오페라 <운명>의 리브레토 작업에 들어가 1905년에 작곡을 끝냅니다. 언뜻 보기엔 딸의 죽음으로 인한 상실감을 극복하기 위해 야나첵이 작곡한 것 같습니다만, 내용은 별로 그렇지 않습니다. 물론 작곡가와 작곡가의 아이가 등장하기는 하지만 말이죠.

<운명>은… 상당히 독특한 작품입니다. 연주시간이 74분을 채우지 못해 700MB 디스크에 저장될 만큼인데도, 온갖 시험적인 선율과 노래가 다 나오는데…. 물론 전 그 방식들을 다 가려 즐길 만한 수준은 아니지만, 특히 관현악으로 장면의 분위기를 표현하는 것이 놀라울 정도로 유려하고, 야나첵의 주특기인, 그러나 바로 그 점 때문에 간혹 지루하기도 하는 대화-선율 이론 (Speech-Melody Theory)에 충실하게 중얼거리는 장면도 어느 것보다 많습니다. 그러니까 집중해서 듣지 않는다면 그저 혼자 궁시렁궁시렁 거리는 듯한 씬이 있어서 어느 것보다 대본을 읽어가며 음악을 듣는 것을 요구한다 싶은 거죠.

이런 곤란한 점들 때문에 이 작품은 그의 생전에 공연을 하지 않았습니다. 야나첵 사후 6년 만인 1936년에 라디오 프로덕션에 의해 초연을 하고, 바로 그 다음 공연은 22년 후인 1958년 이었습니다. 이후 슈트트가르트 공연이 있은 다음 부터는 비교적 무대에 올리는 야나첵이 되었습니다만, 우리나라 공연은 제 생전엔 보지 못할 것 같습니다.
