This is an excavated Buddhist head (Būl-du) made of reddish clay, likely from the Northern and Southern Dynasties period. The artwork strongly exhibits the unique sculptural characteristics of Northern Dynasties Buddhist art, evident in its elongated, downturned eyes, neat facial features, and the fan-shaped spread of the elaborate headdress.

Natural earthy accretion and weathering, formed over a long period of burial, remain across the surface. The finely carved hair, ears, and lip sculptures are also relatively well-preserved. There are traces of perforation holes at the top and bottom, suggesting it was originally part of a larger Buddhist statue or a ritual ornament.

Buddhist sculptures from the Northern and Southern Dynasties are considered crucial in understanding the early styles of Chinese Buddhist art.
