This is a Xining Tongbao coin, minted during the Xining era of Emperor Shenzong of the Northern Song Dynasty in medieval China (1068-1077). During the late Northern Song Dynasty, there was a shortage of copper, leading to a monetary crisis. Iron coins were widely circulated in regions such as Sichuan and Shaanxi. The Xining Tongbao was produced against this backdrop.

Coins issued during the Xining era were broadly categorized into Tongbao, Yuanbao, and Zhongbao. Among these, the small coin (1 wen) was the Yuanbao, the two-cash coin was the Zhongbao, and the three-cash coin was the Tongbao. Iron coins are relatively scarce due to their vulnerability to corrosion and wear, making them rarer than copper coins.

북송 말기에는 구리 부족과 전황(錢荒, 화폐 기근)이 반복되면서 사천(四川)과 섬서(陝西) 등지에서 철전이 광범위하게 유통되었습니다. 희령통보는 그러한 시대적 배경에서 탄생한 철전입니다.

희령년간 발행된 동전은 크게 통보, 원보, 중보로 구분되는데, 이 중 소평전(1문)은 원보, 절이전은 중보, 절삼전은 통보로 발행되었습니다.
철전은 부식과 마모에 취약한 편이라 그 잔존수량이 많지 않고, 그에 따라 희소성이 동전에 비해 상대적으로 높습니다.
