[BUNJANG] Park Yeong-hyo Calligraphy - Haengseo Style / 고서화 철종의 사위였던 현현거사 박영효 행초 묵서

This is a piece of calligraphy in the Haengseo style by Hyeonhyeon Geosa, Park Yeong-hyo.

Hyeonhyeon Geosa was a pen name used by Park Yeong-hyo (1861-1939), a politician of the enlightenment faction during the late Joseon Dynasty and the son-in-law of King Cheoljong.

He is famously known for officially designing and using the Taegeukgi (the Korean flag) for the first time during his visit to Japan in 1882 as part of the 3rd mission. Upon his return, he served as the Mayor of Hanseongbu and promoted modernization policies.

As a radical enlightenment figure alongside Kim Ok-gyun, he initiated a coup to break away from Qing China's influence but failed within three days and subsequently fled to Japan.

He returned to Korea during the Gabo Reform of 1894 and led the reform as the Minister of the Interior. However, he was accused of plotting the deposition of King Gojong the following year and fled to Japan again, living a turbulent life.

After receiving a pardon in 1907, he returned to Korea and served as the Minister of the Royal Household. Following the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910, he accepted a peerage title from Japan and served as an advisor to the Government-General of Chosen and a member of the Japanese House of Peers.

The calligraphy reads:

士能知足心常快 人​到無求品自高
(Sa-neung ji-jok sim-sang-kwae In-do mu-gu pum-ja-go)

Meaning: "A scholar who knows contentment is always happy in heart; a person who reaches a state of having no desires elevates their character naturally."

As a master of Haengseo calligraphy, his dancing brushstrokes are beautiful.

현현거사 박영효의 서예 행초서입니다.
현현거사는 조선 말기 개화파 정치인이자 철종의 사위 금릉위였던 박영효(1861~1939)가 사용했던 호입니디ㅣ.
1882년 제3차 수신사로 일본을 방문할 때 우리나라 최초로 태극기를 공식 제작 사용한것으로 유명하며 귀국 후 한성부 판윤을 지내며 근대화 정책을 추진했습니다.
김옥균 등과 함께 급진개화파로서 청나라의 간섭에서 벗어나기 위한 정변을 일으켰으나 3일 만에 실패하고 일본으로 망명했습니다.
1894년 갑오개혁 당시 귀국해 내무대신으로 개혁을 주도했으나 이듬해 고종 폐위 음모 혐의를 받고 다시 일본으로 망명하는 파란만장한 삶을 살았습니다.
1907년 사면되어 귀국한 뒤 궁내대신 등을 역임했으나 1910년 경술국치 이후 일본으로부터 후작 작위를 받고 조선총독부 중추원 고문 일본 귀족원 의원 등을 지내었습니다.
