Recorded during a special three-day performance series in July 1999 at Chicago's famed Green Mill jazz club, "Companion" captures Patricia Barber at her finest. The recording sessions were treated more like studio dates to accommodate the extensive tracklist, with the audience listening in hushed reverence. While the album's length is concise at just over 40 minutes across 7 tracks, bordering on an EP, it perfectly showcases Barber's comfortable and creative musicality.

Barber defies easy categorization, blending influences from R&B and often covering pop songs (her rendition of Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" is particularly stylish). Her track "If This Isn't Jazz" serves as a pointed response to critiques about her genre classification. Beyond the vocals, her true brilliance lies in her arrangements. With her talented band, Barber weaves magic through her songwriting, piano playing, and vocals on "Companion."
