Chicago-based classic pianist Patricia Barber's sixth album is filled with mellow standards perfect for a rainy day. Singing beloved songs like "Autumn Leaves," "I Fall in Love Too Easily," "Bye Bye Blackbird," and even "Alfie" is always an adventure, but her confident vocals and interpretation prove she is a true master. The minimalist production allows her to convey feelings that are hauntingly melancholic. It's difficult for many singers to convey such poignant emotions without overdoing it, but Barber does it as if it were nothing. The album title, "Nightclub," is fitting. Listening to these love songs makes you feel like you're being seduced by a lounge singer in a smoke-filled room. It is a sophisticated and polished album.

This record is a collection of jazz standards partially requested by Patricia Barber's mother, which Barber had planned for over a decade but was delayed in its release. Barber says, "I felt it was important to establish my own sound, my own music, before releasing a standards album. I felt I achieved that with 'Modern Cool.'" The long preparation period has made 'Nightclub' an even more accomplished album. Barber is a veteran performer who skillfully handles classic jazz. Particularly noteworthy are her excellent version of "Yesterdays," a rare vocal version of "Invitation," and the version of "Alfie" featuring guitarist Charlie Hunter.
