이 책은 사서(四書) 가운데 「대학」과 「중용」의 어려운 구절들을 스승과 제자가 서로 묻고 답하는 문답(問答) 형식으로 풀이해 놓은 유학 경전 해설서입니다. 책 이름의 '학용(學庸)'은 대학(大學)과 중용(中庸)을 줄여 부른 말이고, '회의(會疑)'는 "여러 사람이 품었던 의문점을 모아 풀이했다"는 뜻을 담고 있습니다.

저자는 척산처사(尺山處士)라는 호를 쓰던 재야 학자로, 집안 문중에서 그의 원고를 정리해 목판(木板)에 글자를 새겨 찍어낸 것으로 보입니다. 책 말미의 발문(跋文)에는 을축년(乙丑年) 겨울, 족손(族孫) 영근(瑛根)이 "선생의 원고가 흩어질 것을 염려해 문중이 힘을 모아 간행했다"는 취지의 기록을 남겨, 간행 경위를 짐작할 수 있습니다.
