[BUNJANG] Tang Dynasty Sancai Glazed Octagonal Box with Cobalt Blue Glaze / 당삼채압출양각팔각합

This exquisite octagonal box, reminiscent of a cut diamond, showcases meticulous craftsmanship with perfectly interlocking edges. The Tang Dynasty sancai (three-color) glazed vessel, comprising 34 facets, was likely used to store precious women's accessories.

To prevent misalignment of the lid and base during production, a double incised line was deliberately marked before the glazing process, a technique also observed in celadon and Joseon dynasty pottery to ensure precise fitting.

While 'sancai' typically implies three colors (white, green, and yellow), this piece uniquely incorporates a cobalt blue pigment, expanding the color palette. The inclusion of vibrant blue, derived from costly cobalt, indicates this piece was particularly valued in its time.

This rare example features not only the traditional three colors but also a striking blue glaze, possibly signifying 'many' or 'diverse' colors rather than strictly three.

아마도 여인들의 귀한 장신구를 넣어 보관하던 용도로
쓰이지 않았을까 하는 생각이 든다.
아래 위의 이가 틀어져 잘 맞지 않는 것을
제작 초기 단계부터 방지하고자
성형 후 유액 시유 전에 음각 선을 두 줄 그어
눈에 잘 띄게 표시해 두었다.
고려나 조선의 도공들도 합을 만드는 경우
이처럼 표시를 하여 이가 잘 맞도록 한 예가 종종 있었다.
당삼채라 하여 언제나 흰색, 녹색, 황색의 3색 만을 사용한 것은 아니고
간혹 다른 색이 추가된 경우도 종종 볼 수 있는데,
'삼'은 숫자 3뿐만 아니라 '많다', '다양하다'는 의미로,
이 기물에는 청색 계열의 안료가 추가되었다.
특히, 비싼 코발트 원료를 사용한 청색이 들어간 당삼채는
당시에도 더욱 귀한 대접을 받은 것으로 알려져 있다.
