Wu Zuoren (1908-1997) is undeniably one of the foremost figures in the history of Chinese modern art. If there were twin pillars of Western painting in the modern era like Xu Beihong and Liu Haisu, then in contemporary times, the "Two Wus" – Wu Zuoren and Wu Guanzhong – suffice to explain his stature. Particularly in oil painting, Wu Zuoren, alongside Xu Beihong, forms the primary axis of Chinese modern and contemporary art.

This piece, as its title suggests, depicts a scene of women enjoying the scenery in a pleasure garden during springtime. It is a work from 1947, showcasing the early oil painting style of Wu Zuoren, who studied in Europe starting from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1930 and was influenced by the Impressionist painters of the preceding generation, such as Renoir, who were at the forefront of the global art world at the time.
